The New Guy: Arrival...

(Based on a true experience..None of the characters are fictional...Enjoy)

The year is 1997...

AES EMS, A'nagar...

8am

The door opens. A shy stranger is introduced to the 7^th grade class. He very quietly glances across the classroom of eager lookin students…. Many curious looks… some lazily still bearing the vestiges of last night’s sleep. He is anxious. Still something tells him that this going to be a good day. The Teacher is smiling at him. A pencil falls, penetrating the silence and also the gaze of the students momentarily… He looks in the same direction. A girl comes into view after she picks the pencil and gives a very shy embarrassed smile. He smiles too. For the second time the silence breaks. Now they all are bored and the curiosity about the new arrival has apparently died…J {I don’t think so…J}

8:05am

Being the first day of the term its time for the election of the new monitors for the year (so the teacher, Mrs. C, says).. The New guy again looks around. Many eager lookin candidates, their necks raised and a sudden attentiveness (their slumber has finally ended), looking around rounding their groups and smiling at the possible opponentsJ. Very melodramatic… The New Guy smiles…J He knows this is strange… 12 students raise their hands…6 boys, 6 girls…. Voting is the method by which the leaders will be chosen. And then, all of a sudden, they all look at the New Guy… Very interesting… the 7^th hand is his. Him! (I mean, its his first day, for God sakes…what are his chances:-P? Who the hell does he think he is!).. but there is no laughter. There is surprise. And the teacher smiles and puts up the name on the board.. 2 guys and 2 gals are goin to be selected of these 13 namesJ … He smiles and looks around. This is getting interesting. This is how the system functions: Each student gets to vote for one guy and one gal. simple. The voting begins… 80 pencils scribble….there is silence once again.

8:20am

“Alright! That’s enough” says Mrs. C…. The papers are being collected.. He looks around. The girls are freakishly giggly today, I notice. He doesn’t know if its good or bad. But yes, he is anxiousJ. The votes are being counted. Another guy is entering them on the board for everyone to watch… Even in his nervousness, He is still smiling.. (What gives him that confidence? Must be a jerk!) The results read so….

HOW THE HELL DID THAT HAPPEN???!!! 27 votes to the new guy. Its like the outsider got elected. He is still smiling.. this is interesting He thinks. How good is he! I think the gals voted for Him.. How???? Mrs. C is surprised as well. But she is smiling as she calls Mr. A and The New Guy in front of the class. I find this funny. And they are pronounced the Monitor and Assistant Monitor… "Now you may handle the class…JJ "
